It is a large deciduous tree. It has a distinctive thick, buttressed trunk and broad, spreading branches. The leaves are palmate, typically with 5-9 leaflets that are green with creamy white variegation. The tree produces large, showy, white to pale pink flowers with numerous stamens. The fruit is a woody capsule containing silky fibers known as kapok, surrounding numerous seeds.
