It is a robust, perennial, herbaceous vine. Its stems are long, twining, and often twisted, with a pubescent surface. The leaves are highly variable in shape, ranging from ovate to oblong. The plant produces large, white, axillary flowers that are solitary. The fruit is a capsule, about 1.5 cm in diameter, with conspicuous enlarged sepals and thickened pedicels.

It is traditionally used for treating digestive disorders. It is also employed in Ayurvedic medicine for detoxifying properties.
