It is a tall, deciduous tree with a straight trunk covered in sharp, conical spines when young. The leaves are palmately compound, with 5-7 leaflets that are lanceolate and smooth. The tree produces large, showy, red to orange flowers with five petals. The fruit is a capsule that splits open to release cottony fibers (silk cotton) along with black seeds.

The bark, flowers, and roots are used to treat various ailments such as diarrhea, dysentery, skin diseases, and wounds.
