It is a medium to large deciduous tree with smooth, pale gray bark that peels off in thin layers. The leaves are simple, opposite, elliptical to ovate, and leathery with prominent veins. The tree produces small, pale pink or white flowers in terminal or axillary panicles. The fruit is a small, woody capsule containing numerous winged seeds.

The bark and leaves are sometimes used in local remedies to treat skin conditions, wounds, and fevers.
