It is a perennial herb. It has a short, fleshy rhizome with a strong, aromatic scent. The plant produces simple, broad, ovate leaves that are green and smooth, lying flat on the ground. The leaves grow directly from the rhizome and are arranged in a rosette pattern. It blooms small, white to light purple flowers with a tubular structure. The flowers usually appear singly or in small clusters, often with a central, darker spot.

It is traditionally used to treat indigestion, colds, and headaches.
