It is a small to medium-sized, deciduous or semi-evergreen tree. The leaves are simple, oblong to lanceolate, and have a slightly aromatic smell when crushed. The flowers are small, greenish-yellow, and occur singly or in clusters. The fruit is heart-shaped or irregularly oval, with a rough, reticulated skin that turns brownish or yellowish as it ripens. The flesh is soft, creamy, and sweet, containing numerous black seeds.

It is used in traditional medicine for treating dysentery, fever, and wounds.
