It is a deciduous shrub. It has bipinnately compound leaves with small oval leaflets. The vibrant flowers, typically red, orange, or yellow, are arranged in racemes and have long, protruding stamens. The fruit is a flat, oblong pod, green when young and turning brown when mature. The smooth bark is grayish-brown, and the stems can have small spines.

Bark is used against intestinal worms.
