It is a climbing, woody plant, with slender twining stems. Leaves are opposite, elliptic to ovate, and have a characteristic unpleasant odor when crushed. The flowers are small, tubular, and occur in clusters at the leaf axils. They are usually pale purple to white in color. The fruit is a small, round, berry-like capsule containing several seeds.

Its leaves are used against skin infections.
