It is a large, evergreen tree with a dense, rounded canopy. The leaves are simple, glossy, and dark green, with an ovate to elliptical shape. The tree produces large, spiky, green to yellow fruit, which is the largest fruit produced by a tree. The fruit contains multiple seeds surrounded by fleshy, edible bulbs called arils. The flowers are small and inconspicuous, with male and female flowers occurring on the same tree.

The seeds are used to treat digestive disorders, and the root extracts are used as a remedy for skin diseases and asthma. The latex is applied to wounds for healing.
