It is a perennial shrub that can reach heights of 1-3 meters. It has large, broad, ovate leaves with serrated edges and a rough texture, arranged oppositely on the stem. The plant produces clusters of tubulars, white to pink flowers with prominent, protruding stamens, typically blooming in terminal inflorescences. The flowers are followed by small, shiny, dark blue to black drupes upon maturity.

The leaf paste is used to treat skin disease and used for ornamental purposes.
