It is a perennial shrub with woody, prickly stems, and pubescent leaves. Its ovate leaves are dark green and rough on top, lighter and hairy beneath. The plant produces white to pale violet star-shaped flowers in clusters. Its small, globular berries turn from green to yellow-orange when ripe, containing numerous flat seeds.
Throughout the year
Fruits are edible and fruit paste is used in fungal infection.
