It is a large, deciduous, spreading tree with a symmetrical, pagoda-like branching pattern. The leaves are large, obovate, and glossy, turning red or yellow before falling. The tree produces small, white to greenish flowers arranged in spikes. The fruit is a drupe, oval in shape, with a fibrous, fleshy outer layer and a hard, fibrous shell containing a single seed.

It is widely planted for ornamental purposes.
