It is a small to medium-sized deciduous tree. It has distinctive, bilobed leaves that are green, leathery. The tree is known for its striking purple-to-pinkish flowers, which have five petals and are orchid-like in appearance. These flowers grow in clusters, often covering the tree during the blooming season. The fruit is a flat, elongated pod, containing several flat seeds.

The bark is used for its astringent and anti-inflammatory properties and to treat diarrhea and dysentery.
