It is a medium to large-sized tree. Bark is typically dark brown to black in color and may have a rough or fissured texture. Leaves are simple, alternate, entire, and oblong to elliptic in shape. Flowers are small, inconspicuous, and arranged in clusters at the leaf axils. They are typically greenish-white to pale yellow in color. Fruit is a berry, typically spherical to ovoid in shape. The fruit starts green and turns yellow or orange as it ripens. It contains one to several seeds embedded in a fleshy pulp.

Infusion of bark is used as a treatment for diarrhea and dysentery.
