It is an erect, rhizomatous herb. Leaves are lanceolate or elliptic. have a deep purple cloud running down the middle of the leaf, which extends to the lower surface. Flowers are borne on long spikes and are usually blue to purplish-black in color. They have a tubular shape with prominent bracts. Rhizome is large, ovoid, that is bluish-black or buff in color.

Rhizome is used in skin related issues.
