It is a small to medium-sized evergreen shrub or tree. It has a distinctive corky bark, which is rough and deeply fissured, giving it a rugged appearance. The leaves are narrow, lanceolate, and dark green, resembling those of a willow tree. The flowers are small, yellowish-green, and bloom in clusters. The fruit is a small, round, dark purple to black berry, borne in bunches.
