It is a perennial shrub that can grow up to 2 3 meters in height. It has elongated, lanceolate leaves that are dark green and arranged oppositely on the stem. The plant produces striking inflorescences consisting of tubular, white flowers with prominent red stamens that extend beyond the petals. The flowers are arranged in terminal clusters. Its fruit is a small, dark blue drupe, which turns black upon maturity.

The leaves are used to treat skin related problems.
