It is a palm tree species with solitary trunk, topped with a crown of large, circular, fan-shaped leaves. The leaves are silver-blue or gray-green in color, with deeply divided segments that give them a striking appearance. The trunk is smooth and gray, often with prominent leaf scars. It produces large, pendulous clusters of small, yellow flowers followed by spherical fruits containing a single seed.

Stem sap is used to cure cracked heels.
