It is a woody, climbing shrub with slender, twining stems and simple, alternate leaves that are elliptic to lanceolate, with a smooth, shiny surface. The leaves have a pointed tip and are dark green in color. The flowers are small, white to greenish-yellow, and occur along the stems. The fruit is a small, drupe-like berry that turns red or orange when ripe.

It is traditionally used to treat respiratory problems, like coughs and asthma.
