It is a large, woody climber with robust, angular stems and interlacing branches. The leaves are simple, opposite, ovate to elliptic, with a smooth margin and a leathery texture. The plant produces dense clusters of small, tubular flowers, which are visually striking. The flowers give way to four-winged, green to red fruits that are dry and papery.

It is used in traditional medicine to treat wounds, ulcers, and digestive issues.
